Understanding the Difference Between FUE and FUT Hair Transplant Techniques

By Dr. Ben Butwong, ABHRS-Certified Hair Transplant Surgeon, Mediren Clinic

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE is a modern, minimally invasive hair transplant technique that does not require surgical cutting or stitches.
Each graft is extracted using a micro-punch, creating only tiny needle-sized incisions that close naturally without sutures.

The procedure uses your own healthy hair follicles, resulting in new, permanent hair growth that looks and feels natural.
Compared with traditional strip surgery (FUT), FUE offers faster recovery, less discomfort, and higher survival rateswhen performed by an experienced FUE specialist.

However, the FUE technique is highly skill-dependent.
If performed incorrectly, it can cause irreversible damage to the donor follicles and lead to poor or patchy results.

That’s why some clinics may:

  • Limit FUE to small cases (500–800 grafts)
  • Mix FUE with FUT in one session
  • “Split” multi-hair grafts into smaller ones to appear as more grafts — which makes the hair grow thin and sparse

➡️ Always choose a qualified ABHRS-certified doctor with proven FUE expertise, capable of performing 3,000–4,000 grafts or more in a single day — without mixing FUT methods.

At Mediren Clinic, we specialize exclusively in FUE transplantation performed by an American Board-certified hair surgeon, with over 15 years of focused experience.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

FUT is the traditional method where a strip of scalp is surgically removed from the back of the head.
Hair grafts are then dissected and transplanted into thinning areas, leaving behind a linear scar at the donor site.

Although it can yield many grafts in one session, the technique involves more pain, longer recovery, visible scarring, and tension in the scalp post-surgery.

FUE vs. FUT — Key Differences

Feature

FUE

FUT

Surgical cutting

No scalpel, only tiny needle-sized punches

Requires cutting a strip of scalp

Healing

Heals naturally, no stitches, no sutures

Requires stitches and later removal

Scarring

Microscopic dots, nearly invisible

Linear scar at donor area

Pain & downtime

Minimal pain, 1–2 days recovery (many return to work next day)

More pain, 7–14 days recovery

Natural result

Very natural density, direction, and angle

Natural but may look less refined

Technique complexity

High surgeon skill required

Easier but more invasive

Global trend

Modern, preferred worldwide

Older, declining method

Results may vary depending on individual scalp condition.
Procedure steps may differ for repair or revision cases.

Types of FUE Techniques

Method

Description

Pros

Limitations

Manual FUE

The surgeon extracts grafts manually using a hand-held punch

Precise control

Very slow; impractical for large sessions

Motorized FUE (used at Mediren)

Surgeon-controlled punch connected to a motorized FUE device

Fast, precise, minimal damage; grafts extracted from full healthy zone

Requires advanced surgeon skill

Robotic FUE

Automated extraction using pre-set programming

Consistent pattern

Limited coverage area, square pattern, slower process, high hidden costs, less artistry

At Mediren Clinic, we use the motorized FUE system — the same method adopted by top international FUE centers — with an average extraction speed of 1,000+ grafts per hour, ensuring efficiency, safety, and graft integrity.

Important Note from Dr. Ben

“FUE is not just about technology — it’s about the surgeon’s hands.
No machine or robot can replace the precision, sensitivity, and judgment of a skilled FUE specialist.”
