From Adversity to Asian Leadership: Dr. Ben Butwong’s Journey to Elevating Thailand’s Hair Transplant Industry

On June 4, 2024, Dr. Ben Butwong, founder of Mediren Clinic, was featured in Forbes Thailand, sharing her inspiring journey from a challenging childhood to becoming one of Asia’s leading voices in hair transplantation. With more than a decade of experience and a reputation built on skill, resilience, and relentless dedication, Dr. Ben eventually rose to the role of Vice President of FUE Asia—the first Thai doctor ever to hold this position.

Today, she continues to drive Thailand’s ambition to become a regional centre for Hair Transplant Thailand and to raise medical standards across the ASEAN region.

A Life Shaped by Adversity—and Determination

The accomplished physician known today as “Dr. Ben” once weighed 120 kilograms only a few months before her Forbes interview. For her, this transformation reflects a core belief: anything worth doing must be done with full commitment. She openly describes herself as “addicted to work and achievement”—traits rooted in her upbringing.

Raised in a middle-class family with her mother as the breadwinner, Dr. Ben’s early years were relatively comfortable. But everything changed when she lost her mother in a tragic accident at the age of 12. Financial hardship followed, and she had to support herself through school.

“To survive and continue studying, I worked in every way possible—writing, translating, public speaking, being an event host, even joining local beauty pageants just to earn money,” she shared. At one point, during a period of weight gain, she even worked as a part-time housekeeper. These experiences shaped her resilience and built the perseverance needed for a career in hair restoration surgery, a field requiring unwavering patience, precision, and long hours of practice.

Entering the Highly Demanding Field of Hair Transplantation

Fueled by determination, Dr. Ben studied at Triam Udom Suksa School and later earned admission to medical school. After completing her medical degree, she pursued a three-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, where patients frequently praised her suturing and procedural skills.

“But I wasn’t satisfied,” she recalled. “I wanted something more challenging and different.”

More than a decade ago, hair transplantation was still unfamiliar to many people, and few believed the technique could truly restore hair. Training opportunities, both in Thailand and abroad, were extremely limited. Even after completing training, doctors needed years of hands-on experience—long learning curves and continuous caseloads—to produce consistent, high-quality results.

Driven by her passion, Dr. Ben eventually established Mediren Clinic, specializing in FUE hair transplantation, a procedure requiring intense focus, precision, and many hours per case.

A Growing Industry With Two Distinct Approaches

The hair restoration business continues to grow steadily. According to Dr. Ben, the industry can be divided into two groups:

  1. Quality Selection Group — where expertise, precision, and long-term results are prioritized.
  2. Price-Sensitive / Price-Bidding Group — where decisions lean heavily on cost.

However, hair transplantation has a major limitation: it relies on the patient’s own finite donor hair. Every graft must be preserved and used wisely—this cannot be determined by price alone.

The two main techniques are:

  • FUT (strip method)
  • FUE (no-incision harvesting) — Mediren Clinic’s primary focus

Mediren uses tools tailored to each patient’s scalp characteristics without promoting specific devices as “innovations” for marketing purposes.

“I rely on honesty and results,” Dr. Ben emphasized. “There is no miracle technique in hair transplantation. This work depends on human skill, endurance, and commitment. The donor area is precious—once damaged or over-harvested, it can never return.”

Rising to Stand Among International Hair Transplant Leaders

During her early years, Dr. Ben faced criticism from certain groups who doubted her path. Today, she has proven herself by becoming the first Thai Vice President of FUE Asia, a significant international position. She was also entrusted with hosting the FUE Asia Conference in Thailand, bringing together specialists from around the world and elevating Thailand’s academic standing in hair restoration.

“My goal is to raise Thailand’s hair transplant standards to match international levels and expand our influence throughout ASEAN—with Thailand as the regional hub,” Dr. Ben explained. “I believe Thai medical professionals are second to none.”

Providing training, guidance, and mentorship to new generations of hair transplant doctors has become one of her core missions.

“Standing on the same stage as renowned international surgeons is truly an honour—and if my journey can inspire younger doctors, I’m happy.”

A Journey Built on Resilience, Skill, and Purpose

This is the story of Dr. Ben Butwong—a woman who turned hardship into strength, mastered one of the most demanding branches of aesthetic surgery, and built one of Thailand’s respected hair transplant clinics.

“With patience, determination, and the happiness that comes from achieving meaningful goals, you can overcome discouragement in every moment,” she said in closing.
